Iraq War New Alerts!

Dear friends,

I would like to propose a weekly NO WAR vigil every Friday 3:30-5PM at the Hilo downtown Post Office/Fed. Building and would appreciate your feedback.

Proposed points of unity:
1. We mourn the victims and condemn the attacks of Sept. 11.
2. War and militarism are not the answer.
3. Defend civil liberties.
4. We oppose anti-Islamic, anti-Arab, anti-immigrant and all recial, ethnic, and religious bigotry and violence.
5. Seek global peace through economic and social justice, including ending the illegal U.S. occupation of the Independent nation of Hawaii.

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!

It's time to break the cycle of violence!

The U.S. has been involved in six armed conflicts with Muslim countries in recent times (Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Serbia, Libya), and U.S. sanctions against Iraq have caused the deaths of more than a million people, half of them children under the age of five. Is it any wonder that the U.S. suffered retaliation on September 11 that caused the deaths of more than 5,000 people? The shoe is on the other foot now.

We stand in silent vigil to present a commonsense truth: Violence leads to more violence. It's a truth that local and national leaders and the media and all the talking heads on TV know very well, and express very clearly. U.S. President George W. Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld warn forcefully that with U.S. bombing of Afghanistan there will be further retaliation. We know in our bellies that they are right.

So it just doesn't make sense that, with this clear understanding all around, the U.S. bomb Afghanistan anyway, a country already reduced to rubble from its recent war with Russia. It just doesn't make sense to know there is a serious risk of nuclear and biological retaliation and go ahead with brutal military action anyway.

We want no part of this cruel cycle of violence. We call for time out, and reflection on the responsibility all of us share in this savagery. We call on leaders at every level of government, County, State, National, and International to stand up for common decency and good sense and break this cycle of violence. Of course the people responsible for the September 11 tragedy should be brought to justice. How about those on this side who have been responsible for even more dreadful tragedies, from Columbus to Captain Cook to Henry Kissinger? We want justice in a world court, and peace and safety for everyone everywhere!

STOP THE BOMBING! STOP THE KILLING!

Press Release For Immediate Release 11AM Sept. 12, 2001

Re: copy of leaflet to be distributed at today’s Peace Vigil at 3PM at the downtown Hilo Post Office

May their deaths lead to peace

not vengeance

The purpose of today’s vigil is to offer prayers and thoughts for the victims and their families of yesterday’s terrorist attacks and to seek ways to end our world’s escalating cycles of violence. We hope that cool heads will prevail, producing actions of restraint not revenge.

Violent retaliation will only escalate the cycle of violence that is making the whole world blind to our need to live together on this planet. This tragedy underscores the urgent need to embrace policies of international cooperation, a more just distribution of the world’s resources, and a direction that moves away from militarism and violence as methods of solving problems.

Together, as we mourn the terrible loss of life, let our hearts be filled with a spirit of reconciliation, not revenge. In this spirit, a Memorial Fund for Peace is being established for a Ho`oponopono Center in Hilo under the sponsorship of Ohana Ho`opakele. The purpose of this center is to teach ways to solve problems without violence. Donations to this effort can be made to Ohana Ho`opakele (Memorial Fund for Peace) 15-2727 Hinalea St. Pahoa, Hawaii 96778. Mahalo.
